The 9th ACM International Conference on Systems for Energy-Efficient Built Environments (BuildSys 2022) will host a highly selective, single-track forum for research on systems issues covering all aspects of the built environment, broadly defined.

Advances in the effective integration of networked sensors, building controls, and physical infrastructure are transforming our society, allowing the formation of unprecedented built environments and interlocking physical, social, cyber challenges. Moreover, built environments, including buildings and critical urban infrastructure, account for over half of societys energy consumption and are the mainstay of our nation’s economy, security and health. As a result, there is a broad recognition that systems optimizing explicitly for the built environment are particularly important in improving our society, and represent the foundation for emerging "smart cities".

BuildSys is an ideal venue for researchers and practitioners working to develop and optimize such smart infrastructure systems that are driven by networked sensing, computing, and control functions.

BuildSys 2022 and SenSys 2022 are colocated in Boston!

Best paper award: On Efficient Operation of a V2G-Enabled Virtual Power Plant

Saidur Rahman (University of Alberta), Linda Punt (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University), Omid Ardakanian (University of Alberta), Yashar Ghiassi-Farrokhfal (Rotterdam School of Management, Erasmus University), Xiaoqi Tan (University of Alberta)

Best poster award: Optimizing Participation of Building and Aggregations in Incentive-Based Demand Programs

Utkarsha Agwan, Costas J. Spanos, Kameshwar Poolla (University of California, Berkeley)

BuildSys 2022 will be held in person, 9-10 Nov 2022. Remote presentations and pre-recorded videos are not allowed unless all authors of an accepted paper are under special circumstances that prevent them from attending the conference in person. Request for such exceptions will be considered carefully by the organizing committees.

We are sympathetic to concerns and sentiments about our in-person focus. We will fully accommodate remote authors/speakers of our workshops, poster/demo, and main conference session if they have Visa-related travel issues or COVID/health-related travel issues. All material will be made available after the conference's conclusion to support broader participation and inclusion of the BuildSys community. This includes conference proceedings via ACM digital library and session videos on YouTube. Our aim is always to support the entire international BuildSys community and hope that the measures we are taking to concentrate on in-person interaction while providing the aforementioned resources maximize the in-person experience and supports community members that cannot join us in person who want to learn about the latest findings in a timely, informative manner.
